The use depends on the uistic theories (English) in certain era, which reflects the need of learners in using English. In relation to language teaching and learning, especially English, such knowledge on the English language gives learners the chance to apply in social communication and in any occasion. Linguistic features analyzed are on the levels of Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics and Discourse as the basic components, supported by Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. Since both linguistics and language learning have the same subject to talk about, the knowledge of the language, then, is the core. This paper describes how the three broad views of linguistic theories, namely traditional grammar, generative grammar, and functional grammar work in relation to English language teaching and learning. Changes in language teaching method reflect the development of linguistic theories. Abstract Linguistics as the scientific study of language has very crucial role in running language instruction. From the development of language study, these two sides appear in language teaching. This second view regards language as a science, which is particularly called linguistics. They pay attention to the system of language, how a language works. While others view how a language arranged in form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and even paragraphs. The study analyses the grammar of spoken English along its phonetic and phonological features, stress, rhythm and intonation. The grammar of spoken English exhibits far more diversity than written English. Over-generalizing or overemphasizing of grammar of a language undermines the role of pronunciation and the impact of phonetic and phonological factors on Language Teaching/Learning, with special reference to ESL and EFL. What is important to understand in language learning is the primacy of spoken Language over written Language. The basic function of language is " communication " and begins at the spoken level. From the point of view of pedagogy, grammar and Language Teaching go hand in hand, regardless of the approach to teaching or learning adopted. It implies the structure and typology of language, which are language specific. The term " grammar " is derived from the classical Greek word for writing and is often related to written language, viz., dealing with words, phrases, clauses and sentences, both at morphological and syntactical levels. Grammar has been broadly defined as the rules of a language.
